the Middle East

About Us

This website is a collaborative effort by students enrolled in the WGS340 "Women and Revolution in the Middle East" course at the Women and Gender Studies Institute, University of Toronto in the winter 2024 semester. Here, students share their research, insights, and critical perspectives, enriching our understanding of how women and queers in the Middle East organize, mobilize, write, create, and actively shape their own history. We also scrutinize various Western representations of gender and sexuality in the Middle East, which often obscure and invisibilize feminist and queer struggles under Orientalist and colonialist depictions of women and queers in the region. Through this platform, we aim to contribute to the feminist knowledge production on the Middle East.
